Card on file
Card on File (COF), also known as stored credentials, refers to transactions where the cardholder has authorized a merchant to securely store their card details for future use. This allows merchants to initiate future purchases or recurring charges without requiring the cardholder to re-enter their card information. For subsequent transactions, the security code (CVV) is not needed.
Advantages of COF
Frictionless
Allows customer to make a purchase without providing card data. It works for recurring payments, as subscriptions.
Security
The card is stored accomplishing PCI regulations. Tokenization, encryption, and other methods that are commonly used.
Increased conversion
Since the card is stored in a secure vault, the brand assumes the transaction is risk-free, and fraud prevention engines block COF less.
Synergy with other products
Great complement for tokenization, card verification, card updater, and 3DS. Improved transaction performance and conversions.
Who should use this
The Card on File (COF) feature is for merchants that store card information for future transactions, such as businesses offering subscription services, recurring billing, or frequent repeat purchases. Customers do not need to re-enter their payment details at checkout, which reduces cart abandonment.
